The Big Ear process
From your ear
to your hands.
Your ears are as unique as your fingerprints — which is exactly why foam and one-size plugs never truly fit. Big Ear begins where they can't: with you. We mail a free impression kit to your door, you take quick, painless molds of both your ears at home in about fifteen minutes, and skilled hands in our South Carolina lab shape it into protection made for you and no one else — a seal so natural it disappears the moment it's seated, and holds for years. Here's the whole journey, step by step.

Four steps
What actually happens
No studio visit, no guesswork. Two steps are yours and take a few minutes. Two are ours and take a few weeks — because a real person builds your set by hand. Tap any step.
Your move
Order & get your kit
Pick your product and check out. We ship a free impression kit to your door — no appointment, no studio visit, no fee.
Inside: the two-part putty, ear pieces, a prepaid return box, and a guide that fits on one page.

Your move
Shape your ears
Mix the putty, press it into the ear pieces, and seat them for about five minutes. The guide walks you through every step. It's soft, it doesn't hurt, and it pops right back out.
Rather have a pro do it? Visit a Big Ear provider or any audiologist — we explain all three options below.

Our move
We hand-build your set
Your impressions reach our South Carolina lab and the real work starts: scanning, modeling, casting, fitting, and finishing — all by hand, by skilled craftspeople we pay to get it perfect. Plan on 35–40 business days, with an update at every stage.
This is where your money and your patience go: into a fit and a finish nothing mass-made can touch. It’s the part that earns the fit — scroll down to watch the whole build, day by day.

The promise
It arrives, guaranteed to fit
They show up sealed, sized, and unmistakably yours. Slide them in and they disappear — no pressure, no readjusting.
If the fit isn't right, we remake them. That's the Perfect-Fit Promise, and it's why a Big Ear lasts for years.

Step 2, up close
Three ways to mold your ears
The free home kit is how most people do it. If you'd rather have someone else handle it, two other paths get you the same impressions.
Not a diagram — a real Big Ear impression, start to finish

The free home kit
Free · mailed to your door
- Your kit arrives complete — two-part silicone, a mixing syringe, oto-blocks, an ear light, sample impressions to copy, and a prepaid return label.
- Seat an oto-block in each ear first — this is the step that protects you. Using the ear light to see clearly, gently guide each small foam oto-block by its string into the ear canal until it comes to a comfortable, natural stop. These little dams shield your eardrums and keeps the silicone from traveling too deep. Never push one past an easy stop — snug is perfect.
- Mix the silicone. Knead the two parts together quickly until the color is completely even, with no streaks or swirls left.
- Fill each ear. Load the silicone into the syringe and fill slowly, starting right at the oto-block and working outward, until the bowl sits flush. Let the strings stay outside.
- Let it set — about five minutes. Stay still while it firms up. It stays soft and comfortable the whole time; you’ll feel no pressure and no pain.
- Ease each one out gently, wiggling and guiding it free by the string. What you’re holding are flawless molds of both your ears.
- Drop both impressions in the prepaid box and mail them back — the postage is on us.
What the kit costs

Best for
In person
Want a set of trained hands and zero guesswork? A provider does it for you and we take it from there.
Your own audiologist
Their impression fee applies
- Book a visit and ask for ear impressions for custom earplugs.
- Have them use a deep, canal-length impression for the best seal.
- Send them to us, or mail them yourself — then we build.

Use it
If you see an audiologist anyway, bring home impressions and skip the kit. We work from those just the same.

Your molds arrive at the lab, get matched to your order, and enter the build queue. This is when the clock actually starts.
Stage 1 of 8
Why molded beats foam
A fit that generic can't touch
Molded fills every bend
A shell taken from your own ear sits flush along the whole canal. The seal holds without you jamming it in, so it stays comfortable and you forget it's there.
Why 35–40 business days?
Because we don't keep your size on a shelf — there isn't one. Your set is built from scratch, by hand, around the exact shape of your ears. The wait is the work.
Your free impression kit ships first, so you're moving on day one. Once your molds reach the lab you'll get an update at every stage, and if the fit isn't right when they land, we remake them.
Ships first
Your free impression kit goes out right away. The build clock only starts when your molds reach us.
Updates throughout
You'll hear from us at each stage, so you're never left wondering where your set is.
Perfect-Fit Promise
If the fit isn't right, we remake your set. No fight, no fee.
